What is Hippotherapy?

Hippotherapy is a specialized treatment in which the movement of the horse allows
clients to make great strides in their physical, occupational or speech therapies.
At Riverwood, these sessions consist of one-on-one treatment with a board certified
physical therapist that is trained by AHA (American Hippotherapy Association) and
registered (intermediate level) through NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped
Association). The client, therapist and horse form a partnership in which the movements
of the horse and specially designed exercises help the rider meet their physical
therapy goals. Hippotherapy facilitates posture, mobility, balance, communication
and self awareness in a highly motivating environment.
